Kidney Function Test

Every human has two kidneys, one on either side of the spine, that are each approximately the size of a human fist. The kidneys play several vital roles in maintaining your health.

One of their most important jobs is to filter waste materials from the blood and expel them from the body as urine. The kidneys also help control the levels of water, pH, and various essential minerals in the body. In addition, they’re critical to the production of Vitamin D, Red Blood Cells, and hormones that regulate blood pressure.

What is Kidney Function Test?

If your doctor thinks your kidneys may not be working properly, you may need to undergo kidney function tests. These are simple blood and urine tests that can identify problems with your kidneys.

You may also need kidney function testing done if you have other conditions that can harm the kidneys, such as diabetes or high blood pressure. They can help doctors monitor these conditions.

Liver Function Test

Liver is the heaviest, largest, and one of the most important organs of the body located in the upper right portion of the abdomen. It is responsible for performing the vital function in the body known as metabolism.

The liver carries out multiple functions for your body: it helps break down food, develops proteins, cleans the blood, processes hormones and medication for the body, and stores energy and vitamins for the body. Given the rigor of tasks the liver performs, any change in liver functions manifests itself in the form of symptoms that cannot be ignored.

What is Liver Function Test?

A liver function test is recommended by a doctor or physician, when he/she suspects that your liver may not be functioning normally. This test measures the levels of proteins, bilirubin and liver enzymes in your blood. This helps the doctor understand how well your liver is functioning. In simple terms, a liver function is done to know if your liver has been damaged or not.

Signs of liver dysfunction

Apart from extreme conditions, liver disease or dysfunction happens over a period of time. In the modern context, it’s generally a result of poor diet, excessive alcohol consumption, family medical history, or medication.

Symptoms to watch out for:

Yellowish skin or eyes (jaundice)
Dark-colored urine or light stools
Lack of appetite
Swelling in your belly
Nausea and vomiting

A liver function test is often prescribed by physicians to:

Screen for liver infections such as Hepatitis
Monitor side effects of medication known to affect the liver
Occurrence and Monitor treatment for Liver Disease
Assess the degree of liver scarring (Cirrhosis)

Liver Function Test (LFT) and Preparation

It isn’t just one test; based on your history and symptoms, your physician may want to analyse the levels of various protein and enzymes in your blood. To that end, your physician will recommend a set of tests for analysis.

Among the multitude of liver screening tests, a few common ones include:

Aspartate aminotransferase (AST)
Alanine aminotransferase (ALT)
Alkaline phosphatase (ALP)
Total protein (TP)
Gamma – GGT (glut amyl transferase)
Prothrombin time (PT)
The test itself would require your blood sample. You may have to fast ahead of the test for about 10-12 hours. Upon your physician’s advice, you may have to avoid medication that could influence test results.
